Yes, I Am Stupid

The decision to volunteer for the Board is a difficult one--at least for me.  It's a decision I have flip-flopped on many times, for different reasons.  The bottom line is that sitting on the Board doesn't make any sense.

Here's why:
  • The LLC will not survive without homeowner subsidy or investment
  • It's been obvious for years that most owners don't want to invest
  • Though one can try to force a subsidy (put whatever face on it you want), there will always be a group that won't willingly go along with the plan of the day
  • If the Board saves the golf course, its members will be doing so at risk of suit (the more shares they own, the more likely the suit)
  • If the Board doesn't save the course, other members may rise up because the Board diminished their property values
  • In the event of a suit, life gets unnecessarily complicated
  • Board meetings will likely be contentious, causing even more stress
  • Meanwhile, members will sacrifice precious time from their families, for what?
In the end there's only one reason to be on the Board.  Absent independent owners, the LLC will fill the void, setting the stage for rising service rates to fill its financial needs.  It (LLC) will be able to surreptitiously force a subsidy in a way that's difficult to prove.
